If they are that good at predicting the future and building solutions for it, they should turn their efforts to wiping out hunger and poverty!
I say they got lucky - right place at right time with the '70's oil embargo. Remember, that first Accord was sized for Asian human bodies, not American. Economical certainly, fun maybe, comfortable not! Alas, their market share eventually grew substantial. The other products you mentioned were created by entrenched companies with stable, well established market shares and thus qualify for stroke-of-genius accolades.
As far as GM being "in the business of making inferior copies of popular cars", c'mon and be a little more honest. Exactly what is the Corvette a copy of? And the Suburban, Cadillac, Hummer (no haters please), etc.? I'll assume you mean /currently/ in the business of... because if not you would also have to throw out plenty of other classics and forward thinking entries: Camaro, Nova, Malibu, 442, Riviera, Corvair, etc.
Sadly, my lifelong admiration of GM faded immediately when The Messiah stepped in. I could never stand Ford (despite the wonderful 460 engine in my motor home) but hey, their new stuff is good, they didn't take BHO's bait, and their board of directors is not filled with UAW appointments. Yes, Fusion is compelling as is the new ~350 hp Taurus SHO!
