The Suburban was really a truck with an enclosed body. And that was hte big change - the Wagoner was really the first that approached the idea of a 4wd tall vehicle with a car-like interior. The S-10 and Ranger were really taking the concept of a car-like level of interior and applying it to a true pickup. That is why the Wagoneer is considered really the first one. It was the first to utility vehicle and convert it for leisure use.
As for SUVs, I have owned two. A Jeep Cherokee (which I absolutely loved even though it was massively underpowered and was always breaking down) and a Blazer, which I absolutely hated, mostly because I poured more money into that even though it was only two years old and had a warranty than I did into my Jeep. As for the drawbacks - ever try to park in the city? Ever need to fit in a garage? Ever get stuck behind one at rush hour doing 75 down a crowded highway? Ever go around a sharp corner? I mean, not on purpose?
