I'm not sure an SUV is safer than a good wagon (eg the 9-5). It's that active vs passive safety thing... Though the SUV wins in the weight/height department in a collision, the handling of an SUV is often significantly worse (due to the height + weight) + that may result in a higher likelihood of getting into a collision in the first place (or a reduced ability to avoid one)... it amazes me that on snow days, most of the vehicles I see in a ditch off the side of the highway are suvs!
I think wagon popularity is locally dependent. Around here, wagons are popular (especially awd wagons). saab, volvo, subaru, audi, etc... (4 9-5 wagons on my street of 4 blocks, none of which we own!) We've been keeping an eye out for "the right" used 9-5 wagon, and they seem hard to find. Supply is low, demand is high... There seems to be an inflection in demand new vs used: more demand for sedans than wagons new. more demand for wagons than sedans used. Dealer said they sell 1 wagon for every 10 sedans! I think it is partly demographic related (sedan being an "executive car" + wagon being "family car")...
