There certainly are cumbersome SUV's, just like there used to be cumbersome wagons. Chevy Suburban used to be a wagon, and it was not at all good at handling. Rental fleet SUV's tend to be the larger SUV's because of cargo capacity considerations and the need to avoid competition with their existing small car rental fleet. The most popular SUV's sold over the past decade to consumers have been the smaller and nimbler SUV's, such as Toyota RAV4/Highlander, Honda CRV, Subaru Outback/Forrester, Lexus RX, BMW X3/X5, etc., not the full-size SUV's typically found at rental places.
I own a 9-5 wagon. It's a decent compromise if I can only have one car. However, given that my much lower riding 9-3 convertible can carve the corners much better and still consume less gas doing it, I can sympathize with the logic of many two-car families out there that keep one sedan and one SUV, especially in the snow belt suburbia. I also find the usual criticism of SUV's as "unnecessary" rather distasteful; after all, how often do wagon owners stuff washers in the back anyway? We burn a couple mpg more than sedans day in and day out, every trip we make when we are not stuffing the cargo are to the gills. Some degree of incremental versatility is obviously worth the extra cost to most people; where the cut-off line is obviously is quite subjective.
