The "couple mpg worse than sedan" was in reference to wagon vs. sedan for the very same car platform; e.g. 9-5 wagon vs. 9-5 sedan. Wagons get worse mpg than sedans due to the extra weight and worse aerodynamics, and we wagon owners are not exactly carting around a washer and dryer set every time we drive . . . that's why I was suggesting let's not cast stones at SUV drivers. Heck, some SUV driver's other car at home could be a Prius.
As for the Ford Exploder, the Firestone-Ford Explorer fiasco took place more than a decade ago, in 1999-2000. The predominant type of SUV's sold in the past decade since then have been very different from the old Ford Explorer. For example, a RAV4 weighing about the same as the 9-5 wagon and has comparable cargo capacity actually burns less gas than the 9-5 wagon.
