Free market capitalism has not existed in the US for a long while. There are multiple dimensions of government influence that extends well beyond bailouts (which, of course, have happened before - 1980's S&L crisis, anyone?). The most egregious and most recent was the government involvement and promotion of sub-prime mortgages through Freddy Mac and Fanny Mae, and we all know how that turned out.
GM was dead for many years already, as was apparent through their rapidly declining market share, increasingly burdensome union costs and complete disconnect from the marketplace (see uninspired line-up). In true capitalism, they would have gone the way of many other companies over the years that failed to keep up with both the competition and the marketplace. However, we then get certain people advocating "too big to fail", when true capitalism would espouse "too bad to remain".
