while, as you point out, competition is important to progress... competition need not be solely out of financial greed... for an academic, "academic greed", the level of personal fulfillment that comes from discovering + publishing first, may be more important than excessive financial reward... in reality, that was the drive behind most great minds (like Newton and Einstein)...
I remember from a business 101 course I took as an undergrad (aka teaching common sense), there was some formalism of a "pyramid of needs"... personal fulfillment was the top of it, but the underlying layers (food, shelter, etc) come first... silly really, but my point is: at some point, accomplishment is more than simple financial reward + that threshold varies person to person... imho the less dependent one is on financial reward and the sooner one gets on to "academic greed", the better off one is...
