As others have stated, between startup costs, gear, maintenance, insurance, the cost of joyriding (ie miles on the bike you wouldn't have driven in the car), etc you're very unlikely to pay for the bike in fuel cost savings. Ride because you want to ride, not because you think it'll work economically.

I have a 1996 Suzuki GS500. Only put a few thousand miles per year on it, mainly fair weather commuting here in the DC area. It's a lot of fun. The GS500 is a good entry level bike. Cheap, good mileage (I get about 55 mpg), easy to maintain.
