"The vast majority of cars are driven by two out of their four wheels. Therefore by referencing "driven wheels", you are stating 2 out of 4 wheels, which maybe you'll agree is 50%?"
Not at all. That's why I hinted that you guys were probably attributing your own ignorance to me. The front wheel and the rear wheel carry disproportional duties in braking. Front wheels does about 70% of the work. That's why I gave 3 reasons that combined to result in only 50% or less recoverable kinetic energy (before discussing energy conversion).
"Have you ever driven a motorcycle, on which the front and rear brakes can be controlled independently? I have many hours driving motorcycles and in my experience, in all but panic or high-performance stops the vehicle can be stopped safely with either brake regardless of gradient. I have also driven cars with non-functional rear brakes with little difficulty, even on hills."
Find a more steep hill. I guess just because you have driven cars with non-functional rear brakes, all cars should have their rear brakes removed to save weight. LOL. Get rid of seat belt, airbags, too; heck why not crumple zone too. You probably never "needed" them either.
Unfortunately, carmakers have too much asset to put forth designs that are "safe _most_ of the time." They can not deliberately cut corners on safety without risking being sued, not in the post-1970's world.
