My wife and I went through this a over a dozen years ago with our two sons and have now been asked by my Sister-In-Law to help our Niece with the process. My SIL is battling some brain injury/chemistry issues which affect her memory and planning abilities while her ex can't be relied upon.
Our niece will be entering her sophomore year and has already selected her primary field of college studies and schools of interest. The following is what my wife and I remember of the process:
Sophomore Year - National Merit Qualifying Test, arranged and scheduled by the High School but fees are required.
Early Junior Year - Take the ACT and SAT for practice. Student to submit applications and schedule the tests. Start visiting the campuses of colleges which interesst the student.
Late Junior Year - Take the ACT and SAT for real. Student to submit applications and schedule the tests. Continue campus visits.
Early Senior Year - Submit applications. Continue campous visits if needed.
Late Senior Year - Submit FAFSA and/or PROFILE for financial aid consideration.
So what has changed since my wife and I guided our sons through the process blindly years ago?
Thanks in advance.
