Think hard about AP classes and tests. A lot depends on the school and
the student's ability. If they're comfortable keeping up, they'll be in
with the best kids in the school. At the big high school in town those
were the best classes, with most of the motivated kids. For a not-so-strong
student in a very competitive school it might not be a great idea.
Unfortunately schools are pushing kids into AP classes to bump up
their rankings, which may not be good.
As for the tests,at some colleges you can get a lot of credit (best) or placement (still good), but it varies from school to school. Most post
the AP score requirements and what you get. Very strong students may not
even have to take the AP class for the easier exams -- just go through
the AP-specific books.
My oldest got enough credit to basically fit a second degree into the
4 years at school. Placement is good too, you don't have to repeat what
you already know. The downside with either is as a freshman you will
be in with more upperclassmen, which is harder and may be a bit isolating.
This is another reason for avoiding early decision -- wait for all the
decisions to come in and compare AP standing and cost among all the
alternatives.
I'm glad high school is over, that's for sure.
