My seven-year streak of having a perfectly clear driving record ended on Tuesday on the Mass Pike in Charlton. I had a Chevy Cruze with NJ plates up my butt in the left lane (I couldn't even see his headlights or grill in my rearview mirror) so I had sped up to get up to an opening in the middle lane to let asshat by. Sure enough I came around the bend and there's a Massachusetts statie there. The Taurus in front of me (going faster) slammed on his brakes and immediately cut across the three lanes of traffic to hide in the slow lane. I slowed down and wedged into the middle lane. Cop pulls out, I'm thinking I'm safe assuming he's going after the Taurus but I guess he preferred CT plates. So I got slapped with a $200 speeding ticket that says I was doing 85 in a 65. I swear on my life I was doing 82; still speeding, I admit, but 85 is high. Then the officer checked off "Lidar" and "Estimated" on the ticket. I'm betting he lasered the Taurus and estimated I was going the same speed.
Is this worth contesting? I can handle $200 (not that I want to) and was just going to pay the thing. But my friend, who is the Queen of Moving Violations, is saying I should contest it and try to get it lowered at least, or reported as a non-moving violation so it won't affect my insurance. I'm more concerned about long-term ramifications like insurance. I don't even know if CT and MA talk to each other about driving records. Any insight here?
Thank you very much in advance!!
