My 1965 Chevy had a cartridge filter in a vertical configuration, once you undid the retaining bolt you had a slow drip around the bolt and basically a cupful of oil like you would with a canister filter. I agree with SWEDECAR that placement and orientation play a bigger part in mess and ease of the oil change than the filter type. On some BMWs the filter cartridge is in a housing that is accessible from the top of the engine, anyone have any experience with these? Does the oil drain from that housing or is there a stop valve to keep it full? Also, I recall recommendations to wipe out the interior of the cartridge housing.. adding to the mess and waste so maybe there is little waste savings between cartridge and canister filters? My vote is for horizontal mount with either design. It would be nice if the designers could put a horizontal filter at the lowest point in the motor so this was all you would have to remove to drain the oil and change the filter.
