Turn of the century (HA!) Volvos switched to a bottom mount cartridge style filter. It goes exactly where the metal can would have. I never found changing the cartridge to be a big deal. Yes, the "cap" comes out full, but I just dump it into the same pan that I drained the oil into. In some ways, it's superior to the BMW/GM top-mount situation, since you can dump the cartridge out too saving handling, and you don't have to worry about drips across the engine as you remove the cartridge. I found the oil on my Volvo I5 to be ever so slightly easier to change than my GM Ecotec for these reasons.
I'd definitely prefer vertical (top or bottom) to a horizontal situation, since you'd inevitably end up with oil running down the length of the cap, which you'd then have to clean off. When you're tossing the whole filter it's not a problem, but when you need to save the cap it's less than ideal. ;)
Of course, nothing beats my Falcon - you can reach both the filter and the drain plug from the top of the engine bay. Kick the pan under the car, and the only time you even need to be on the ground is to pick the full pan back up. ;)
