I recycle the oil, including that which drains from the spin-on filter before I recycle the filter.
For plastic oil containers, I've never heard of rinsing with water. You've certainly heard the old saying "oil and water don't mix", there's a reason for that idiom. Without detergents, heat and/or serious agitation, how are you getting any additional significant oil from the plastic container?
After emptying into the engine, I place them on the garage floor, resting on a narrow side with the "bottom" raised up an inch or so. After a day or two I'll take one and invert into the engine oil fill point, leave it drain overnight, then the next morning throw it into the recycling bin. Repeat the next night with another container until they're all gone. I guarantee that I'm getting more oil from the container than your rinsing with water technique.
Perhaps not ideal, but the recycling system is going to get all kinds of oils, dirt and other debris with their plastic stock. Certainly it can handle this little engine oil.
