ABS is just an automated system to prevent lock-up. It is mostly unnecessary if one knows how to threshold brake and does not panic in an emergency. Otoh, in situations when you want to lock up (eg in snow, that can be desirable to stop faster!), you can't with ABS...
TCS makes a big difference in snow on the 9-5. In that with TCS on, it works somewhat close to a c900 in snow... well not really that close... turn TCS off and it's not great at all. I think it has something to do with vehicle weight, wider tires, dynamics, etc... those c900's are fantastic snow cars.
Subarus have AWD. So that is quite helpful whenever you provide power to the wheels and probably the main difference you've noted. I have not had a chance to drive a modern Subie in snow, but the older Outback I drove through a blizzard in the Rockies did a little better than the c900 going forward (AWD) but not as well braking and handling... the extra clearance and the fact that it was brand new and had a full tank of gas was also reassuring! But then whenever it was time to brake, it was surprisingly not as good as I would have thought. Fortunately it was slow moving highway (with the fast accumulating + blowing snow) so only minimal braking was required. Maybe with stability control and newer brakes they have improved?
