I agree, TCS/ESP in the 9-5 makes a big difference Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Fri, 24 Jan 2014 06:50:34 In Reply to: Systems seem to vary, ELaw [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 24 Jan 2014 05:12:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Maybe it is my driving style though? 04 arc sedan, ESP... If you go really easy on the car with TCS off (and maybe Winter mode on) you can slowly do things with no difference vs TCS on. But what is the fun of that? For me, TCS does let me go a bit faster around corners without losing control (I'm talking about really icy or really snowy/slushy/slick situations here). I can drive the car like I drive the 1989 c900 and not lose control. If I do that with TCS/ESP off, it's not pretty. That said, I can do the same things in the c900 *much* faster than in the 9-5 with TCS on. TCS limits wheel spin, but the throttle threshold for grip is much lower than that for the c900... even though both have Nokian Hakka winter tires (old 185/65R15 4's on the 1989, new 205/55R16 R's on the 9-5). Eg I can take a 90 degree corner from flat to uphill much faster, and then accelerate faster up the hill also.
All in all, I think vehicle dynamics, lighter weight maybe, and narrower tires, are more important in winter than TCS. AWD is useful when there is throttle, but irrelevant when braking. So again, cars like a Forester might be great at plowing through some deep stuff, but I bet the c900 is quicker taking sharp corners in snow/slush/ice (Forster has horrible vehicle dynamics)... I've been meaning to test this stuff out in a parking lot with my Forester owning friends... no time though!
