But I also remember a different, earlier version....
Before the 944 came out there was the 924. It handled well, but had no power and lacked the fun factor. But it also, very briefly, came in a turbo version. I was working for VWoA at the time and we had a nice motor pool of VWs, Audis and a few Porsches. One day I was asked to take a 924 Turbo to a dealer where it would be picked up by the auto writer for the Boston Globe. So off I went. It was pretty normal until 3,000 rpm, when the boost came in like I flipped a switch. YOW!
Mid afternoon on Rte 128 (the ring road west of Boston) in 1979 was not a busy travel time and there was little traffic. But there *was* this guy in a yellow Trans Am, complete with the screaming chicken on the hood. And he kept egging me on in my little 4 cylinder Porsche. Being 29 and still relatively stupid, I went along until we were running side by side at about 80, this in the day of the 55 mph national speed limit. The TransAm guy punched it. But I was already at about 3500 rpm in whatever gear I was in. I dropped the hammer and the 924 accelerated so hard it was like the TransAm guy had stood on the brakes with both feet. I was at about 110-120 in a blink, slowed right down to about 70 and waited for the TA to catch up. Which he did, looking the 924 over and trying to figure out what happened. Sure was amusing.
I see a nice 944 every so often. There are a few around here. Would be fun to have one.
