Have used drain plug magnets for many years. Started by making my own from speed sensor and other cylindrical magnets. At first the magnet collects a far amount of stuff depending on how long the engine has been run. With successive oil changes the debri collected decreases to fine particles (black mud) attached primarily to the magnet edge.
I've used the "Gold" magnets, and they seem to work ok. Sharp edges on the magnet seem to catch more debri, the magnetic lines are more concentrated there.
Be careful of plugs with large diameter magnets, the large hole in the plug for the magnet can mechanically weaken the plug, making the head easier to twist off.
