As far as GM buying the other 50% of Saab, I think they felt that full ownership would make it easier for them to integrate Saab into its global product line and expand Saab's offerings beyond just the 9-3 and 9-5. I also think Ford's acquisition of Volvo's car division (for significantly more than GM ended up having paid for Saab) the year before pressured/encouraged GM to grab the other half of Saab.
