A good starting point is to read about what is happening currently and what is likely to happen in the future and try to learn now what will be both marketable and interesting in the future. NYU runs some interesting Saturday seminars on ecommerce and peripheral areas.
I work in ecommerce and specialise in monitoring user behaviour on sites and feed this intelligence and strategy to marketing. I work as a consultant because the wages are better at least while there is (still) a shortage of skilled engineers. My background is in humanities but I did a post grad diploma and a lot of self-learning and common sense. With a background in Art maybe you would be interested in web graphic design though the need for these types isn't as great as good programmers and database people.
Good luck
