I think our '97 A-4 quattro does not have TCS; that came later. But do you feel that the Audi system is poorly designed? If so, do you mean the suspension or the AWD?
I don't pretend to know the answer, I'm just curious as to what you think since you seem to be very knowledgable. I was under the impression that the Audi system, with its Torsen differential was a good one. Maybe others have surpassed it?
I've also owned a Subaru. It had a 5 sp. so it was the non-electronic version with a viscous coupling. In Southern Cal., with rain but no snow, both the Subaru and Audi systems seem to work very well; there's no detectable slippage under normal conditions with either one.
