Any interest in Good breakdown stories? Here's mine;
Last year, coming back to Georgia from vacation (military Leave) from my parents place in Wisconsin cruisin just north of Marion Illinois in my 1980 900T. Radar detector starts doing its self test every few miles. Figured a loose wire or something, no big deal, back off a little. Then the turn signals won't flash. Weird. The sterio starts turning on and off. No alternator light, can't be that serious. Thinking loose connection by my left foot at this point, hit the wayside and gave it a wiggle. No luck, but the gas gauge is low, hit the truck stop at the next exit. At the bottom of the off ramp the red alternator light comes on. OH-OH. Top off the tank and yep, dead battery. So I push the car away from the pumps and thinkin whats this gonna cost. Ain't no way I'll find a "B" motor alternator for a 80 in Marion Illinois on a Saturday night. Goona cost more than the cars worth, motels, more vacation, Megga bucks for the roadside mechanic to special order one and DAMN, I have a spare at home. Hmmm....Walmart accross the street...might as well go look at guns or something interesting. Old guy in a blue vest inside asks me Can I Help you sir? Told him I needed an Alternator, like a generator ya know? Said they sold Generators in sporting goods...Heh! So take one small camping generator, 2 motor cycle tie down straps to hold it on through the back windows to the roof. Set the battery charger on the passenger seat, run the wires to the battery. Fill the oil and gas (Don't spill it through the sunroof) fire that sucker up and hit the freeway. The look on the face of the taxi driver in Chatanoga Tennesse said it all when I started the generator before I got in to start the car. And the Truck drivers on the CB wanted to know what the box on the roof with the green light was. Damn it worked!!! Best part Thursday night- storm of the decade...Electricity out for hours at the house...And I got a generator to keep the brewskies cold and the tunes rockin. I guess thats why my nickname is Macgyver
