I hope this dosn't offend anyone but i was traveling in a 85' VW GTI. I was on my way to a mountain bike event at Mount Snow in Vermont. Nando(the owner of the gti) and I left NY at about 11pm he had just bought the car. Now normally when you buy a car that is 15 years old you have some work to do, but my Saab was in the shop so we had no choice,we drove the gti. When we get to Mass. I take the pilot seat and start driving. it was very warm outside since it was mid june. A lightbulb pops up over my head-"Lets see if the A/C works!". Up till i turned the A/C on the car was running great. After the dust clears from the vents we start to smell rubber burning. At this point i turn the A/C off. WE pull into a closed gas station somewhere in Mass. After the smoke cleared from the engine bay we saw what we figured-all the belts melted. the A/C compressor seized and was not spinning. Now it was about 12am middle of nowhere nothing around, we make arrangements to have Nando's brother caome up in the mourning with the new belts. Okay now what do we do? We got a ride from a police officer to a diner about 10 miles away from the GTI. WE eat and start to walk back to the car, we sleep in the car. With the sunlight we also see that the alternator mount has cracked- Nando's brother comes up with all the wrong belts so we ended up fixing it with a panty hose and some speaker wire to hold the alternator in place-we also had to remove the A/C compressor to do this. OH BOY WHAT A DAY !!!!
