The journalist's comments are that according to Volvo you really have to step on it - and in fact it is possible for a skilled driver to learn how to make the system work when it is really needed BUT
1) it's not supposed to be an acquired skill to make a 4WD system drive all four wheels (your aunt should be able to do it), and
2) 4WD is particularly useful (i.e., necessary) when you're a pulling a trailer. If you're pulling your boat up a hill you may not want to "step on it".
His conclusions are that it's a cheap (i.e., bad) system where the threshold for when the rear wheels kick in is far too high (apparently also has something to do with the ABS system). Several Swedes - he says - have complained about getting stuck and have returned their car to Volvo for a refund. Rumour has it that Volvo are going to change from the cheap visco system to the more expensive Haldex system in the near future. Until then, if you want a Volvo, get the ordinary V70 - it's cheaper and lighter.
Regards,
Caspar
