Haha.
F1 cars have no real bearing on our road vehicles. Those 3.0L v10's are required by formula, not because they are good at very much. To extract the power from those, they use a super short stroke, which really can hurt economy. Without the formula, i've heard them say they'd use much bigger engines to get the same power.
Turbo diesel is another animal altogether. Diesel fuel has more power by volume than gasoline. They use turbos to overcome the volumetric innefficency of diesels.
Turbos can have a positive effect on economy because they let a 2.0L make as much power as a 3.0L, etc. The downside is that compression ratio must be lowered, and there's a little extra weight and friction caused by the intake and exhaust ends of the turbo. It seems the progress of NA engines has balanced out the turbo edge because of this.
Look at road cars.. A big american 3.8L sedan gets pretty much the same mileage as our 2.0L saab.
Not to say the saab engine sucks ( it's more fun than that lumbering 3.8 v6 ) but i don't see a real efficency advantage. If saab popped in a efficient powerful non-turbo v6, i wouldn't complain much!
