Fog lights, driving lights, any difference?

Anyone care to expound on the theories behind fog light technology, plus differences between fog and daytime driving lights, if any? The Bosch set I put on (below front bumper) recently casts a wide wash of white/yellow light. It definitely improves visibility when coupled with the low beams. Nothing beats high beams for optimum lighting though. Adding fog lights is a nice medium between the low and high setting. Nowadays we see those "spacy" blue or amber tinted lights mounted in the bumper corners of new cars, plus the add-on lights popular with the tin can muffler crowd. Those of you with such lights, is the blue tint an improvement?
And now we have daytime driving lights. I've yet to see the need to supplement sunlight, even if overcast. Daytime rain or storm conditions, yes, they require lighting. I smell marketing ploys behind the daytime light trend. Comments?
