the following was just posted on the A-4 email list (I'm still considering a new Avant, in spite of, or because, I haven't seen one in person yet,
local dealer still waiting his first)
*****************************************************************************
The A4 1.8T has _very little_ in the way of turbo lag, period. Have any of
you guys ever driven an old Audi 5 cyl turbo, a Saab turbo, even the new
Scooby WRX? Those cars have lag. The old 5 cyl turbos (10V) have virtually
nothing below 3000, then watch out. If you want to jump off the line with a
A4 1.8T, just give it more gas.
***************************************************************************
I'm new to the turbo world, have never owned one, never dated one. It's my understanding that turbo lag is directly related to the size (mass) of the turbocharger, and the amount of boost. Where I'm confused is the boost part. I assume that the boost pressure builds up, isn't full boost instantenously, so a higher boost will take longer to get to full power, but wouldn't it (typically) start boosting as quickly as a lower boost setting.
I test drove new Linear and Aero (both automatics), new A-4 1.8T sedan (manual, quattro). First test drives of each, new engines so didn't hammer them, will have to drive again and pay closer attention to turbo lags.
What does this unbiased group think of how various turbos lag?
thanks
Ed
