I've found that the "high-performance" all-season tires are more high performance, and the all-season thing is NOT real. I posted that I use 4-season tires, but notice that I use the narrower width. Like the size for the base car (185/65-15 or 195/60-15). Width makes a big difference, narrower is better for snow.
If you get much ice, there's REALLY no substitute for true winter/ice tires. If you get much snow, the lower-performance 4-season tires seem to go better than the high-performance ones, most likely because of the width. I think tires can get a '4-season' rating just by using a rubber compound with a low glass-transition temperature. It has NOTHING to do with the design of the tread blocks.
The narrow 4-season tires have worked well for me on an '86 Jetta & '95 Integra. Our '89 Saab 900 never did well without true snow tires because of the weight distribution. The weight distribution of our 9³ is better than the '89 900 but its my wife's car & she wants 'real' snow tires...
