I'd definitely start with my '97 Aero. Changes would be as follows:
* 2.3-liter 5-cylinder variable compression engine w/turbo (not supercharger), ~300 horsepower, 7000 rpm redline, no balance shafts
* Fully documented "Trionic X" engine management that allows modifications by the vehicle owner
* Stainless exhaust that as much as possible sounds like an '86 SPG with Saab sport exhaust
* AWD - not one of the overly complex modern systems, just manually-lockable conventional center and rear diffs like my 4000 Quattro
* 6-speed manual transmisison with shift-feel like a Honda
* Independent rear suspension
* High-pressure headlight squirter system instead of wipers
* 100% galvanized body, or maybe aluminum?
* Lifetime warranty on the following: climate-control system (particularly heater core, blower motor and a/c parts), headliner and dash pad, rear defroster, headlight lenses, DI cassette, sunroof (wind noise and leaks)
* Dash layout more like C900, especially location of power-mirror switches
* Keep Aero seats in front, but put regular 9000 seats in rear so they'll fold properly
* Better visibility to the rear, replace "funhouse mirror" rear window with optically-correct one
* Did I mention AWD? :^)
