Greg, thanks for the information, I saw bike riding mentioned in one of your oil postings. Not a ruse, but just a little kidding about the oil analysis for bike lube.

I do my own auto and bike maintenance. Peddled 27" wheel road bikes for yrs, and only occasionally replaced chainsets, and found it easy to buy the correct parts, as it seemed there were limited choices, shimano, campy, sagumo.

Found it different with the mountain bike. Replaced OEM chainsets two summers ago, and the rear hub is pretty much shot already, with the front sprockets showing some teething as well, and just wondering if improper lube had anything to do with it. Also there are so many different types of chainsets and makes available nowadays, I find it easier to buy the right parts for the Saab.

If I could not do the work on the Raleigh myself, I probably would have easily eclipsed the original purchase price in repair/replacement costs. Like cars, it seems the bike dealers make most of their money on parts and service.

Back to the chainset wear, I am 20 lbs heavier now, the mtn bike is heavier, the peddle loads vary greatly, and definately more dust on the trails.

I buy bike parts from Arvada Cycle, as it is close to where I live. But I did get conflicting info on frequency of chain replacement, which going forward I'll do more often. Saab parts I buy on the web from e euro.

Thought some of the posters perusing the oil topics might be amused by the "gear switch" to the more basic form of transport.

BTW I bought my 9-5 as a program car from is it Tynan's in Fort Collins. They knew next to nothing about the car, but were about $ 1,500 better than Shaw on price.
