It's not the SUV - it's the driver... But the problem is that to all to many _drivers_, the fact that they are driving a sport futility instills any sense of security. AWD/FWD do not a good winter driving experience make. I grew up in Montana. I drove AWD and 4WD cars & trucks from the first (my first car was an old '84 Subaru GL). I was a bad driver. I'll admit. But experience, and my mistakes, taught me how to read both the car and the road. Living in Alaska later, with my '93 Impreza, I was always amazed. I had that car up there for 2 years. I pulled 8 4WD vehicles out of drifts & gulleys with my tow cable (didn't take any statistics on where the drivers had learned to drive - but I'd wager it either wasn't a snowbound state, or they were new drivers).
I just think that SUV's cause bad drivers to become worse - because too many drivers naiively assume that the vehicle will prevent them from getting into bad situations. Not the case.
When I lived in NC with my Impreza, I was always amazed. It was the SUV drivers who got in accidents on the rare day it snowed. We had an ice storm that then covered with snow. One of those "don't go out unless you have to get food" days. While out, I was headed up a 2-lane each way road... the right lane was full of cars that were unable to get up this steep hill. Some stuck - some rolling back. I proceeded carefully up the left lane @ maybe 25MPH. A doof in a Ford SUV blew past ME on the left (yes, across a double yellow, up a hill, on ice), at somewhere north of 40MPH. Then proceeded to slam into an oncoming car at the crest of the hill.
It wasn't the SUV that made him do that, it was his own stupidity. But I think the SUV didn't help the situation when it came to his confidence.
Of course, up here in Seattle, you can always gauge how bad the weather is by how many BMW's are stranded out on the road... :-)
