I can't recall ever hearing a plausible explanation why Saab went with capacitive discharge and it's well known reliabilty issues. It is used in racing applications (high rpms) and on some aircraft engines - but they typically have a backup system. Don't know if higher current was needed at the time to support the ionization measurement or just something an eningeer thought was an innovation.
Capacitive discharge can generate a high quality spark in a quicker time than an induced coil operating at 12v, but that is only of value in very high rpm scenarios.
But it is now a part of Saabs legacy.
