no - if it were as simple as coil on plug you wouldn't see the frequent failures - I think the last gen of the 9-3 though may have been coil on plug.
The 9-5 DIC used a some solid state stuff (thyristor), a step up voltage transformer and a charge capacitor, this fed a significantly larger current into the primary circuit of the ignition coils than the commonly used 12v, and hence the secondary output (spark) was a great deal more powerful than that commonly used.
So the additional complexity caused multiple points of failure and as with most electrical devices the higher the power generated the more heat is generated as a by product - leading to more coil failures.
Kind of really really stupid idea from a cost and reliability perspective and as Justin correctly pointed out the ignition coil commonly used in most other cars likely would have done the job.
But if that is correct then why did Saab go with their high powered DIC ?
