Huh? Every article I've read says the R32 is an underpowered pig compared to the Evo and STi - all that leather and sound deadening adds weight, and it has a relatively gutless 240hp V6.
A modified viggen puts down a lot of torque, and can walk away from many stock cars on the highway, but the Evos and STis (in the right hands) are very quick cars. Similar mods on a Viggen and Evo/STi would result in the Viggen being the clear loser, IMO.
I think the feeling that 1-2 gears are strong and the rest are weak comes from the ridiculously fast AWD launch that's possible (and no torque limiter in 1-2) - 3-6 are still quick gears, but compared to that neck-snapping launch, anything will feel slow. 3.9 final drive and 250lb-ft of torque at the wheels stock is quite a bit of grunt, no matter what gear you're in.
