yeah - you reminded me that the summer guys I was hired with all had connections in management there. My fireman's job only lasted only a couple of months and I think I was laid off . One summer I worked in the car shop for the S Buffalo RR and I remember overhearing one of the full timers remarking that things were slowing down going by the number of rr cars in the yard awaiting repair. So what does he do - what any good dedicated employee would do - he takes his torch unit to the tracks beyond the repair yard and starts cutting off the foot and handhold bars, doing his part to generate more work for the car shop. For a number of workers I came across in non production jobs - machine shop, electricians, pipefitters etc they perfected the art of dragging jobs out so they could be assured of Sat overtime. Any guys who worked in unionized industries - steel auto rubber and so on will relate to this.
