The memories - overtime - I stayed beyond my 8 hrs when they had the wreck in the coke ovens - quencher cars or something messed up the tracks so we were sent in to repair. It was like hell in there - soot heat flames toxic fumes, definately something out of Dante's inferno.
Anyways I worked an extra 4 hrs to finish the job and had a softball game that evening so rushed to my car and drove right to the ballfield where the game was in progress. Went to my teams bench to show I was available and saw people just starring at me, one guy tells me I best go washup. I go into the rest room and in the mirror I see my face is basically covered in black coke oven soot.
I now remember watching the flaming smoking coke pushed out of the oven into the quencher cars and toxic smoke everywhere. In the blast furnace we had submarine cars that carried the molten iron ore over to the basic oxygen furnace (BOF)
how did we survive that place !
