Mobil 1 runs thin for its API weight. I'll say it again - go to the forums at bobistheoilguy.com if you want hard numbers.
It does not shear down faster than other synthetics, it just starts off thinner. If it's breaking down out of grade in 3000mi you have a cooling problem.
I just got an oil analysis on the 0W-40 out of my 170K-mile '92 9000T at 6000mi on the change and everything looked fine.
There are (a couple) slightly better oils, and there are a lot of much worse oils. 3000-mi oil changes are ridiculous for a street car. 5000 is IMO the starting point for 'reasonable'. All our cars get changed around 6000mi.
0W-40 Mobil1 is good stuff, or the 0W-30 German Castrol, or comparable Amsoil or whatever. 15W-50 Mobil 1 is fine if you need the extra viscosity, I think like other M1 oils it's still thinner than normal for its API viscosity number so it'd be more like a 10W-40 anyway.
For engines like the 454 in my old Suburban with lots of sliding friction in the valvetrain I use the Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 to get the extra EP additive. My M5 gets the Castrol TWS 10W-60, available at your BMW dealer for $8/liter if you really want it.
