Great writeup but you left out one important thing.
"Way back when", meaning the mid '70's thru mid-'80's depending on make/model, may cars had more primitive cats.
They were used on carbureted or non-closed-loop FI cars, and only had an oxidation function (no reduction). The car would be run really lean or secondary air was injected so additional O2 would be available in the exhaust, and the cat reacted this with CO to change it to CO2. I think they could also react HC with the O2 to get H2O and CO2. They didn't do anything about oxides of Nitrogen, as 3-way cats do.
The appeal of those cats was because they only relied on having excess O2, mixture control didn't need to be as accurate.
