What does the pickup wheel look like? is it damaged at all? sounds like thats more likely than the hall sensor itself damaged with those symptoms.
You can't use a B204 distributor for the same reason you can't use a late non-turbo B202 distributor...in like 1989 the hall sensor moved to the crank, it's in the crank in all B2x4's, and switched from a hall sensor to a finer-grained wheel and magneto.
You can use any B202 distributor with a hall sensor in it (turbo newer than -86, or non-turbo until 89) For the non-turbo units, you'll be swapping the vacuum unit from your turbo distributor.
