The preload is critical, too much or to little and you know. Getting a good long term preload leads to things like crush rings, the ring may get crushed a bit more with temperature changes or. The difference in temperature coeffiences of the steel shaft and aluminum housing makes the preload wander all over with temperature. Once saw an Audi tranny with a heavy wavy or curved washer at one end for preload compensation over temperature.
