Hey Chaz,
My experience is that pinion bearing failure is a mileage and wear-related
failure, something all c900 5-speeds will eventually get. The bearing has
to endure very heavy axial loading under acceleration, and when wear or
additional crush of the crush sleeve gives produces a little play in the bearing,
you hear the characteristic whine as the pinion gear starts to move around on
the ring gear. It’s just the way it wears out. Keep driving with the whining and
eventually the movement will be enough to walk the pinion shaft around and
break a tooth and/or explode the bearing.
High power c900’s generally don’t last long enough to get the PB failure. They
break the gear teeth off second gear or third gear due to sheer torque and/or shaft
deflection, which has been discussed below. Another failure is to blow out the case
around the passenger side inner driver, because under acceleration the pass side driver
is being pushed out of the case. Sometimes it becomes free!
Jordan: I had an idea where you reinforce the c900 trans case like this:
cut the case in 3-4 sections, and between each section bolt in a "bulkhead"
piece, say 1/4" thick steel. It would look kind of like aircraft assembly
when it was done. But this would allow for strategic reinforcement and
very high strength. And a lot of gaskets and chances for leaks, too, but
whatever. Just something to think about.
