you can see that there is almost a conical shape to the pinion gear
its pretty clear that you want the contact on a certain area on the pinion gear & that the depth of the pinion gear greatly effects the contact area on the ring gear
Id sugjest you buy a book on this
almost everytime Ive rebuilt any kind of diff (& Ive rebuilt allot of them) when you use new bearings reusing the same depth shims 99% of the time gets the pinion depth perfect
& when using new gears I just patern them with grease this is kind of old school method but Ive never used a pinion depth guage ever & Ive only managed to get a couple of them rong to where they were a lil noisy
I was tought to do diffs this way a long time ago by an old guy then :-)
