The manifold heights are difficult to compare as the webbing on the topside is different (I have been checking in my garage); by the look of it the upper side of the bolt holes are not on the same height and I even was not sure to use the bottom of the air duct as a reference point. What makes it even more tricky is the fact that the mating surface where the carb is bolted on is angled upwards with the higher part at the right-hand rear (I am speaking of the two-barrel manifold where the angling is very well visible). At this highest point it is 19-20mm higher than the manifold's upper side edge (where the the cylinder heads meet the manifold).
The total height of a Weber 32/36 is 12cm (heat insulating gasket included) You need to add the thickness of the flange for the PCV valve. I couldn't find one I have lying somewhere but I guess it is ± 1 cm thick, so the approximate total height of carb, gasket and flange is 13cm. This 13cm is the level of the top of the carb where the air filter mates. The height of the carb from this mating surface to the top is 3,3cm. As all these measurements are still quite fragmentary I measured how high the top of the air filter is above the right hand rocker cover: the top of the nuts are ± 10,5cm over the rocker cover topside. The air filter is a low type that is ± 6cm high, nuts included.
A Weber 40DCNF won't help in height; the body is just as high as a 32/36. You win a few mm because it doesn't have choke plates; on a 32/36 these stick out a bit when they are in open position. What's more, a DCNF isn't a direct bolt-on because the base is smaller and the bolt holes are not as wide apart as on a 32/36; you would need an adapter plate, consuming precious height, or have to be creative with a DCNF manifold and an aluminium welder.
I hope this is of any use. If needed, mail me off-list, I can mail some pictures of the Weber 32/36 I have on my '73 Sonett.
