Depending on the quality of water in your area, I'd
highly reccomend only using distilled water in your
cooling system. High levels of dissolved minerals can
block passages over time or PH balance in your water
can be fatal with aluminum and/or ferrous components
in an engine. It's not worth the slight cost for
distilled water to take any chances. If you have an
emergency, by all means stick in whatever liquid is
handy.
Mix up a solution of coolant and distilled water at
the proper concentration, typically 50/50 and only use
that in your car. Keep it handy in your garage or,
better yet, in your trunk.
Also change the coolant on a regular basis. The
coolant does wear out and loses its anti corrosive
factors.
FWIW, have had passages blocked in an Aluminum head by
overage coolant and had freeze plugs corrode out in
another that I used tap water in. In both cases, the
repairs were VERY expensive and totally avoidable.
