The side airbag sensors are in the B pillar IIRC, so my guess is that they may not typically deploy with a hit to the front fender (and not to the passenger compartment). I wouldn't take the "non visible" damage to the MB as a sign of safety. As described, it appears your 9-3 bore the brunt of the damage. Better an impact to the front fender than the doors. Had it been a "bumper to bumper" collision, then a "comparison" may be appropriate.
I hope your wife was OK. In the end, it's not what happens to the car in an accident that's important-it's the well-being of the people inside of it after the accident.
