I'm not really going to try to convince you to stay in the Saab family but I would seriously reconsider the MB and BMW route. Let's face it, if the Saab reliability bothered you, I doubt the BMW or MB will be much better. All cars, especially European one, have issues. It's just a result of all the things they pack into these cars anymore. My wife's older E36 BMW has been fairly reliable but like the Saab there are known issues - ones that I'm aware of and can prepare for at least. In the past 10 years MB has been known for loosing ground in reliability. The new BMW 3-series is a very nice (and expensive) car but I would be very hesitant buying one until it reaches the end of its production cycle. If you want a good mix of performance and reliability, the Japanese are playing a very good game these days. Both of the Acuras (TSX and TL) are nice cars, as is the Lexus IS. The new G35 is now out and has been getting great reviews (edmunds and Autoweek).
That said, I think the new 9-3 has grown out of a lot of the teething issues of the '03s. I suspect (ok, hope) the '07 interior resolves a lot of the interior issues. And there's always the 9-5; of course, it only looks good in silver but it's still a very nice car. I like it more every time I see it. (OK, that's my subtle way of trying to keep you in the Saab family!)
Good luck in your search and I hope you find a car that can blend the right amount of driving pleasure, reliability, and overall enjoyment possible.
