owners. I visit a few other boards too, but mostly just for the low brow entertainment factor of everyone's immature ranting. For helpful advise, this is the place.
As for gasoline, I run mid-grade (89 octane) from September thru May, and premium (93 octane) in the summer months. This combination has worked well with my 2000 9-5 (191,000 miles and counting) and I am duplicating it with my wife's 2006 9-3SC.
The amount of metal shavings you describe concerns me. I worked in an automatic transmission factory for 25 years and know that even with high pressure washing/blasting of the machined components some metal chips would only be dislodged after assembly into a completed transmission. That is why the trannys had filters and magnets in their bottom pans, to keep these chips out of the flowing fluid. Possibly one part of your engine did not get high pressure washed properly prior to assembly and the filter did its job by stopping the chips.
Did the Dealer perform this oil and filter change? Did they note the accumulation of chips? Did they express surprise or comment? Examine the filter closely at change #2, continued evidence of chips could be serious. No evidence means the initial filter did its job and everything should be OK.
