I can't remember if I posted my removal details on this board or another back in August when I took them off. It was a 30 minute job total!
I had to order two new trim strips from the Dealer to cover the grooves in the roof. These come pre-painted from Saab in the color of your car. The SportCombi has two styles of roof trim strips - with factory roof rails, and without factoru roof rails. Cost of these strips was $200.
I removed the plastic covers on the ends of the roof rails using just my fingers. I then removed the eight bolts securing the roof rails to the car, and lifted the rails off the car. I used the openings in the old trim strips as pry points for my fingers to pull the old trim strips off the body. On the bottom side of each strip will be 10 to 12 nylon blocks, each block has 8 to 10 fingers which grasp a standing cleat in the roof recess covered by the trim strips.
I positioned the new trim strip above the roof recess, pressed it firmly into the groove, then used the heel of my hand to smack it slightly for a secure fit. Same for other side. No tools used other than wrench for the bolts, no risk of messing up the body or paint.
Since my wife didn't want the rails on our car the Dealer deducted their cost from the final deal. I bought new trim strips for around $200, installed them myself at zero cost, then sold the old rails for the cost of my new strips plus shipping to the buyers address.
The Parts Counter Manager and Body Shop Manager were both very cooperative with the whole deal. They were as curious as I on whether this could be done, and spent time playing with a SportCombi on their lot, then searching the catalog for the correct parts, to satisfy their own curiosity as well as my request.
Adding rails to a car with Dealer sourced parts could be a $400 to $500 task. Cost of buying the factory rails (sold as an option for $219 IIRC), and then the new "with factory rails" roof trim strips at around $200.
