"Oh, how I'd love to tour the SAAB factory and see how they make cars."

Interesting that you suggested that - and it brings up a story that is somewhat relevant, but dated. There is a private car museum located in Bernardsville, NJ, where the owner, a retired automobile magazine editor, houses a rotating collection of his own antique cars and those of his friends. If you ever visit Somerset County, go check it out, its free and the cars are absolutely stunning.

Anyway, during a visit to this man's museum, I asked him about Saab. He just shook his head and laughed from remembering just how awful Saab manufacturing was back in the day. When he was visiting the factory in the 1960s, he saw unmanned assembly line stations where the workers had taken a break and the operations were just not getting done. Also, during that same plant tour, he saw two Saab employees sleeping in a car as it travelled down the line. When he pointed that out to the plant manager, the Saab manager was oblivious and didn't seem to care very much.

He then immediately compared the Saab factory with that of Volvo, which he also visited during that trip. In his view, Volvo was the model of industrial efficiency, and he even praised their manufacturing prowess by deeming it comparable to what General Motors was achieving at that time - which was quite a compliment since GM back then was like what Toyota is today.

I know these stories are 40 years old, but sometimes I wonder whether such traditions were passed down over the years. When door screws are not being tightened, I wonder whether the line workers decided to take a smoke break or a nap at that time. :-)
